Mohanlal comes from a village called Molela it is a small, non descript village in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, settled on the banks of the Banas River. Like most crafts, Murtikala has been passed from generation to generation, through the sons of the family, evolving with each generation. Typically the women do the hard work of getting the clay ready while the men make the murtis and decorate them. Mohanlal is one of the finest artisan in Molela who has expertise in making terracotta sculpture, panel, wall tiles, idols of God & Goddess and decorative items. Mohanlal has participated in various cross culture workshops and exhibitions held in Australia, Greece, France, UK, USA, Japan. Mohanlal continues to promote this art of traditional pottery through his Mohanlal Terracotta Art Research and Development centre.
